The Golden Jubilee season ended formally with a thank you and appreciation party organised by the College Management to thank all those who played active roles during the successful golden jubilee celebrations. The roll call included members of the jubilee organising committee, deans and directors, heads of departments and units, the unions, alumni and the student representatives.

The Provost, Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Ijioma, on behalf of Management profusely thanked members of the College community for their efforts, dedication to duty and sacrifice in the course of work. She informed them that the golden jubilee was well received around the country and several colleges of education have sent their congratulations and commendations. Dr. (Mrs.) Ijioma informed the staff that God will reward every worker in due season.

The Provost also extended her thanks to the various heads that contributed their quota and also galvanized their staff for the smooth operations in 2013. Also she thanked the student union government President for marshalling his constituency and maintaining peace on campus.

IMAG0607The fiftieth year anniversary of the college was celebrated with year-long activities that culminated in the 25th Convocation ceremony of the College for its NCE and PDE graduates and also the award of fellowships to deserving Nigerians. In a bid to thank the Provost for her people oriented leadership, the golden jubilee committee presented awards of excellence in leadership to the Provost, Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Ijioma and the chairman of the committee, ABC Toni Duraku.

A year that started with hope and anticipation but ended with a flourish and joy, 2013 will always be evergreen in the minds of all those associated with the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri. And like Mazi Alvan Ikoku who was the first indigenous Nigerian to own a secondary school – the Aggrey Memorial – the College has proved itself once more primus interpares among colleges of education in the country.

While Alvan Ikoku brought hope to his people with the establishment of the Aggrey Memorial Grammar School in Arochukwu, so Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education has continued to carry the beacon of education and enlightenment these half century of years.

And thus Christ brought light to all Mankind when He was incarnated and born at Christmas. Have yourself a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Alvan.

Happy Golden days.

In his Convocation address the Minister praised Alvan for being the first institution to commence the award of the PDE in the country. He recognized the excellent pedigree of the College and remarked that many universities even lack such status. He acknowledged the physical transformation in the College when he earlier commissioned several buildings and projects of the Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Ijioma administration. They include the giant Nathan Ejiogu Science Laboratory and Classrooms building, the 800 seater Prof. Nwagwu lecture theatre in Shell Camp and the 2-storey, 18 classroom block for the Demonstration Centre of the department of Primary Education.

The Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha also commended the Provost on the physical transformation stating that the landscape of the College had changed much since the last time (two years ago) he visited the College.

In her Convocation address, the Provost, Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing C. Ijioma reiterated the call to the Federal Government to upgrade the status of the College to a University. She congratulated the students on successfully graduating and encouraged them to go on and excel in life.

Several prizes were awarded to the best students in the NCE and PDE including the opportunity to shake hands with the representative of the Minister. Mr. Umoren who graduated with a distinction in Physics delivered the Valedictory Speech.

A major highlight of the Convocation ceremony was the award of Distinguished Fellowship Award to deserving Nigerians. They are Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, SGF; Prof. (Mrs.) Ruquyattu Ahmed Rufa’i, former Minister of Education; Mr. Frank Nneji, CEO of ABC Transport and Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, Secretary to the State Government of Abia State. They now join an elite group of Fellowship awardees which include the Governor of Imo State.

The 25th Convocation ceremony rounded off the Jubilee season which kicked off one year ago in December, 2012 with the unveiling of the Golden Jubilee mascot and logo. With hindsight now, one can say it was a successful and wonderful celebration befitting of the landmark achievement of fifty years. Big congratulations to the Alvan Ikoku Community, alumni and well-wishers both in Nigeria and in the Diaspora.
