Commitee of Chairmen of Governing Councils Visit the College


The College on Tuesday, 29th April, 2014 played host to the Committee of Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Colleges of Education which stopped over in Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri on the South East leg of their tour of Federal Colleges of Education. In the group were the Chairman of Chairmen, Senator Emma Anosike, Chairman Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, the Chairmen of Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo and Federal College of Education, Umunze and Prince Ajibola Oyinlola, Chairman, AIFCE and the host chairman.

Senator Anosike, an ex-student of the College, while making his remarks congratulated the Management on developments in the College. He intimated that the Committee is on ground to gather intelligence and report back to the Federal Government. Furthermore, he mandated the staff to support the Management and not write petitions as it can affect the system negatively.

The Provost welcomed the group to Alvan Ikoku, the primus interpares of Colleges of Education in Nigeria.  In her words: “For over fifty years this institution has stood firm as a colossus in the education sector and the history of education in Nigeria, especially in the South Eastern part cannot be contemplated without the role of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri.” She highlighted all the new developments evident in the College especially in academics, infrastructure and capacity development. The Provost explained that the College was experiencing a renaissance all thanks to the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan evident in increased funding to education.


The Chairmen had an interaction with the Management, Council Members, Deans and Directors and thereafter undertook a facility tour of the College seeing such projects as the on-going bridges across Nworie River, the completed new science block, completed lecture theatres and the on-going gymnasium.

In a vote of thanks to the committee of chairmen, Mr. Mike Ajileye, the Dean of General Studies, thanked the chairmen for visiting the College and prayed that their visit will yield positive transformation in the near future. He recalled that Senator Anosike is a Fellow of the College who was decorated during the 24th convocation ceremony. Ajileye also congratulated the Provost and her Management for transforming the College, remarking that Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing C. Ijioma’s administration is the best the College has witnessed in two dozen years.

The Committee has since departed for the Federal College of Education, Omoku on the next leg of their tour.
