The Minister of State for Education, Prof. (Mrs.) Viola Onwuliri has promised that the Federal Government will continue to support the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri with the requisite funds it needs. The Minister announced this while commissioning two lecture complexes built in record time with TETFUND intervention during her assessment tour of tertiary institutions in Imo State. She praised the efforts of the College Management led by the Provost, Dr. (Mrs.) Blessing Ijioma saying her performance reiterated the confidence placed on women by President Goodluck Jonathan.
In her speech welcoming the Minister of State to the College, Dr. (Mrs.) Ijioma declared that her administration’s focus and determination has been to reposition the College as the best of its kind in Africa. She made a call for the upgrading of the College to a university stating that “The College currently boasts of about 170 Ph.D holders and about 380 Master’s degree holders as members of the academic staff. Our College is better equipped in terms of infrastructure and personnel than many autonomous degree awarding institutions.”
Prof. (Mrs.) Onwuliri also toured on-going projects like the ICT Building billed to house 600 computer workstations and the Micro-Teaching Laboratory Complex.
In the Minister’s entourage was the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mac-John Nwaobiala, The Executive Secretary NUC, Prof. Julius Okogie, The Executive Secretary NCCE, Prof. Muhammed Ibn Junaid, The Executive Secretary, TeTFund, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro and The Commissioner of Education, Imo State, Prof. Uba Nnabue.
Staff and students trooped out enmasse to receive the ministerial convoy. Prof (Mrs.) Onwuliri addresed the College community in the auditorium expressing appreciation for the warm reception she received and promising that all aspirations of the College will be looked into.
The student body led by the SUG President, Comrade Orient Nwadike also presented the Minister with an award.
